I'm always excited to get out my calculator and total up all the minutes read at home by your amazing children. What was even more exciting this month was that some students who hadn't previously been turning in reading logs, have done just that. Not only does this help his/her grade but also adds more minutes to our class total for the month. January has the 2nd highest total that we've seen all year. The students read 11,788 minutes at home! Isn't that super? Not to mention that 19 students earned their Book It award for January.
The top three readers were Elise with 1,910 minutes, Garrett V. with 1,658 minutes, and Emily with 795 minutes! Great job to these three and ALL my fantastic readers. Keep it up, it'll pay off in the end!

Recycle your shoes!
Brown fourth and fifth graders will once again be collecting shoes in conjunction with the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District's "Recycle Heart and Sole" shoe recycling program. They are planning to collect used shoes for reuse during the week of Feb. 7-11.
We hope to keep worn shoes out of landfills while at the same time helping those that are less fortunate. Last year, along with other schools in the surrounding area, we collected about 7,000 pairs of shoes. We hope to collect even more this year.
Just have your child bring in used shoes, placing them in the shoe collection containers in front of the main office. It's just that easy. The fourth and fifth grade students will do the rest. Thanks for helping the fourth and fifth grade students with this very worthwhile initiative.

UPDATE on Ambassador night
I hope you've had an enjoyable few days at home. The ambassador game has been rescheduled for tomorrow night (Friday night) and the students will be able to use the tickets I sent home with them on Monday. Friday night's game is already "senior night" so now it'll be ambassador night as well. Don't forget that an adult needs to attend the game with the student and will need to pay as well.

Math Website
Your child had an opportunity to explore another fun math website last week. It is a great tool for practicing multiplication facts. The website is www.multiplication.com.
Athletic Ambassador Night
Our class has been invited to attend the H.S. Girls Basketball game on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Two of our ambassadors are on the varsity team so we'll get to see them play. Our third ambassador will sit with us while we watch the game. Additionally, our class will be recognized right after the JV game ends. I have tickets for the students so watch for them to go home tomorrow (Mon.) As of right now, all 3 of us 3rd grade teachers are planning to attend.

Thoughtful Third Graders
Dear Thoughtful Third Graders,
As the sadness of the day set in (just kidding-your parents know what I mean), the bell rang and you all began to file into the classroom. Then birthday card after birthday card was given to me and my heart was filled. Two of you even bought me a chicken biscuit! All your thoughts, cards, and chicken biscuits meant a lot and really helped me have a good day. Thank you so much for being so kind and giving:) You are the best! Love, Mrs. Kintner

Welcome Back
Just a few hours of break left but the Colts just won so I'm ready for anything! As our break winds down, I just wanted to remind you of a couple of things.
First, report cards will be available on Friday. Hopefully, there will be no surprises for you if you've been checking your child's grades throughout the grading period- especially since mid-term reports are no longer sent out.
Second, look for your child's mid year reading test to come home. I'm asking that you review it with your child and correct those that he/she missed then return it back to school by Friday.
Third, your child will bring home a snowman to decorate for our bulletin board. I was very impressed by the creativity I saw with the gingerbread people.
